Fostering Program

Our perfect companions
never have fewer than four feet.
~ Colette
To offer a home to a horse in need has many rewards, both to the horse and the foster "parents".
The Issue: Whether horses are being seized by authorities, or people are offering them up for rescue, they often need immediate help. It will never be affordable to have a facility that can take all the horses in need. Because of the size of animal, and the space needed to keep them, the only practical solution is a network of approved foster homes, where horses can thrive in a home like setting.
Our Solution: Appealing to the horse world, and to people with small holdings that may be suitable for horses. HPS will establish a data base of homes that could take an animal on short notice. These homes are vital as they give authorities time to find a suitable placement for the horse. We see this as similar to a “safe” house, where the horse is protected and can be assessed and cared for until its future can be determined. We will coordinate with other rescue operations as well as local animal authorities to place horses in one of our foster homes when needed as well. HPS administrators and volunteers would assess homes and follow up on placements. By networking with partners in other parts of the province, foster homes can be established in other communities as well.
Benefits: Currently, authorities hesitate to seize horses due to lack of care facilities to take them to, and low budgets to cover cost; hence there are horses suffering needlessly. Our plan would provide the bridge that will enable more horses to find proper care in a timely manner, and will remove some of the hesitation of authorities in commencing proceedings to seize.
