HPS Horse Hospice
Somewhere in time’s own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go…

Canada's First Horse Hospice
The Issue: Many people are unwilling to deal with humanely euthanizing their horses, believing that the costs are prohibitive, and realizing that the size of the animal makes disposal difficult and unpleasant. Often these animals are abandoned in fields where they die a slow death, or they are shipped to auction where they may be sold for meat value. People see this as a “neater” solution, but with increased restrictions at the meat plants fewer dealers are interested in the meat value of a horse. Meat plants are being closed across Canada and have all been closed in the U.S. In addition, current video and documentation by CBC and others has shown that slaughter house practices are archaic and inhumane in the extreme.
Our Solution: We plan to build a shelter and paddock situation where people can bring their animals for humane euthanasia. Our facility will allow the horse to stay until it’s comfortable and settled (usually a couple of days) and to have a “buddy” next to him/her for company. We will create a setting where horse and owner can feel peaceful and private for their final moments, and a grief counsellor for people who may need comfort and support. The horse will be treated with respect and dignity, well fed, and groomed before being humanely euthanized. We will also set up a fund to help people in need with costs. We will offer several programs at varying prices:
a. Basic service - Cost: $300
Drop off the horse at our facility and we arrange the euthanasia and disposal for the same day. Owners are free to stay if they wish.
b. Additional services include:
i. Overnight stay: $50 per day, includes feed and bedding
ii. Grief counsellor: $60, counselling by separate arrangement.
iii. Hauling of the horse is available at varying costs, depending on distance.
We also offer some tasteful memorabilia, such as pictures, plaques, etc.
Benefits: The HPS Horse Hospice will reduce the number of horses shipped to auction, or needlessly suffering in fields and pastures. In addition, people who genuinely want to do the “right” thing for their horses will have a humane option, and those who can’t afford it can qualify for financial assistance as well.
The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done.
For this--the last battle--can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand
Don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no tears.
You'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close--we two--these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
