Initiatives and Projects - Overview
Since inception HPS has been an active force in the horse community. Following is an outline of some of the ways we have been able to contribute:
1. Testifying on behalf of the BCSPCA in various abuse cases.
2. Publishing articles to raise public awareness of the plight of horses.
3. Building networks with other like minded organizations.
4. Working to educate the public on proper horse care by publishing brochures and instructional videos and distributing materials at fairs, horse shows and exhibitions.
5. Taking complaint calls, checking out potential situations, documenting them and reporting serious cases to the BCSPCA.
6. Acting as a referral agency, using a network of connections and membership to help place horses in need.
7. Successfully lobbying for freeze branding in the province to help protect horses from theft.
8. Lobbying against abusive practices at horse slaughter facilities, as well as appalling transportation methods of horses bound to slaughter.
9. Involvement in the care, rehab and placement of PMU mares from farms across Canada that were being closed down.
10. Sponsoring hardship and/or hard to place horses.
HPS is currently operating from a small facility where we are able to take in a limited number of horses to be cared for and eventually placed in approved homes or used in our programs. We are now in the developmental stages of planning and executing our next phase of initiatives.
